Labor Day Road Safety
by: Nicole T. Sanzo
Labor Day weekend is the unofficial final weekend of the summer. The last weekend before school gets into full swing. The last weekend before weekend trips to the beach become obsolete. The last weekend to celebrate what summer has to offer. Below are some driving safety tips that we have gathered to help ensure that your weekend goes by smoothly.
Driving Safety Tips
Plan Your Route
- Utilize GPS or other navigation apps to optimize your route.
- Check out the area of your destination ahead of time, see if there are any road closures, concerts that will affect traffic or other events that might cause delays.
- Check weather and traffic conditions. Look for potential delays due to weather or construction along your route.
- Avoid peak traffic times if you are able.
Drive Defensively
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Pay attention to other drivers. Pay attention to chance in traffic patterns.
- Maintain a safe following distance.
- Don’t speed. Adhere to speed limits and adjust your speed based on road and weather conditions.
- Watch for blind spots.
- Be prepared for sudden stops. Traffic congestion is common on Labor Day weekend.
- Always signal before turning, merging or changing lanes.
Before You Go
- Check your vehicle. Replenish the fluids, check the tire pressure and make sure your brakes are in good working order.
- Buckle up. Make sure you and all passengers have their seat belts secured.
- Get enough rest. Don’t drive tired.
- DO NOT drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
