St. Patrick's Day Safety Tips 2026

Parties, parades, and green as far as the eye can see. St. Patrick’s Day is a day of celebration whether you are of Irish descent or not. Like most holidays the celebration continues into the weekend as well.

At Slaughter & Lupton Law we believe you should be prepared for all scenarios and ready for whatever a celebration may throw at you, that’s why we have put together some safety tips for you to use and hope the luck of the Irish stays on your side.

Plan Ahead

If you choose to drink on St. Patrick’s Day plan your ride in advance. Have a designated sober driver or utilize a ride share app. If you are the host of an event, plan for your guests to leave their vehicle and ensure they have a safe way to get home.

If you are attending a parade or know that you will be going to a bar, be familiar with the location you are going to beforehand.

Stay Vigilant: Know the Common Injuries that Can Occur

  • Drunk Driving Accident: In Virginia, during the 2025 St. Patrick’s Day weekend, spanning Friday, March 14, 2025, through Tuesday, March 18, 2025, there were 101 alcohol-related collisions. Hampton Roads specifically experienced 20 collisions. In North Carolina in 2023, 229 alcohol-related collisions were reported during St. Patrick’s Day week.

  • Distracted Driving: Many streets get closed for parade routes, and the confusion and detours can lead to erratic driving.

  • Pedestrian Accidents: Intoxicated pedestrians may enter roadways unexpectedly, and drunk drivers pose a risk to pedestrians on sidewalks and on crosswalks.

  • Premises Liability (Slip and Fall Accidents): Spilt drinks cause slippery floors, overcrowded bars and streets can cause tripping hazards, and parade routes can lead to cords and barricades being in places that are not expected.
